We are thrilled that you are considering applying for a place for your child at TDMS. At TDMS we are unique in having transition points at Years 6, 7, 9 and 12 as well as welcoming students into our community mid-way through the year.
At TDMS we believe that a successful transition to our school can have a wholly positive impact on your child’s experience of school and learning for many years to come. This is why we work tirelessly to create a positive, welcoming and informative transition process.
Students sit at the heart of everything we do at TDMS; knowing your child, as both a person and a student, is extremely important to us. We are interested in learning about their well-being, their background, their talents, hopes, dreams, worries, and fears. It is for these reasons that our transition process focuses on finding out as much as possible about each individual child and enabling you and your child to find out as much as possible about the TDMS community before they join the school on their first day.
At TDMS we strongly believe that transition is vital in helping children and their parents/carers get to know their new school better and believe that a carefully planned transition process helps to relieve many fears that children understandably have around starting a new school. As part of the TDMS transition offer we provide the following for each child and their families:
- A welcome phone call during the summer term welcoming you and your child to the school community and giving you the chance to ask any questions right at the start of the transition process.
- Visits from the headteacher and transition team to your child’s current school
- Visits from your child’s new Head of Year and Achievement Leader to their current school to meet both the new students and also their current teachers.
- Opportunities for parents/carers to meet with the head and other key staff at both TDMS and also at your child’s current school.
Invitations to visit TDMS for both you and your child during the school day for individual tours of the school. - Opportunities for you and your child to meet and talk to current TDMS students to get a student perspective and to ask any questions you may have.
- A bespoke package for students with additional needs offering opportunities to meet the SEND team and chances to visit TDMS and get to know the school, key members staff and make some new friends. This will also provide our SEND team with the chance to get to know your child and plan how we can best meet their needs.
- Opportunities for you and your child to meet with identified leaders depending on your child’s need.
In addition to this, we also offer the following transition opportunities for you and your child:
Welcome Evening, Tuesday 09 June, 5.30pm – 7.00pm
Join us at our Welcome Evening to meet current TDMS students and staff and learn more about our school community. We hope you understand that our invitation extends to two adults only; this is to ensure your evening is comfortable and we can talk with every parent/carer and their child. All children are very welcome to attend. Doors will open at 5:00pm.
TDMS Three-Day Transition Event
At TDMS, we are extremely proud of our three-day transition event that is offered to each and every student joining Year 6 in September 2026. Students joining TDMS will all have the opportunity to experience the following:
Tuesday 23 June – TDMS welcome day
Students will be welcomed to TDMS and discover their new tutor groups and spend the day getting to know their new school.
Wednesday 24 June – TDMS science and arts day
Students will experience an exciting live science show in the large hall and will also participate in arts-based workshops and get to know their way around the school as well as developing new skills.
Thursday 25 June – TDMS team building day
This will give each child the opportunity to forge new friendships and experience new and exciting activities developing teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills.
Day for new starters at the start of term – Wednesday 3 September 2026
The new school year begins with a day just for students in Years 6, 9 and 12 providing them with the chance to get their bearings and get to know the school in advance of other students returning to school.

It is for these reasons that our mid-year admission process focuses on finding out as much as possible about each individual child and enabling you and your child to find out as much as possible about the TDMS community before joining the school. At TDMS we strongly believe that transition is vital in helping children and their parents/carers get to know their new school better and believe that a carefully planned transition process helps to relieve many fears that children understandably have around starting a new school. Following your application and offer, as part of the TDMS mid-year admissions journey we will:
- Call once you have been offered a place welcoming you and your child to the school community, giving you the chance to ask any questions right at the start of the transition process.
- Invite you to visit TDMS during the school day for an individual tour of the school to meet with key staff and leaders, depending on your child’s need. This visit will also provide you and your child the opportunity to meet and talk to current TDMS students to get a student perspective and to ask any questions you may have.
- Share our ‘Mid-Year Admissions Passport’ for parents and carers to complete prior to your visit. This form enables you to provide a detailed overview of your child, helping us to get to know them as an individual and ensuring we are best placed to support a smooth and successful transition into our school. The information will be shared with your child’s Head of Year and Form Tutor so that they can provide the most appropriate support from the outset.
- Find out about you and your child ensuring we make the right grouping decisions and identifying the right support for your child. TDMS staff will contact your child’s current school to find out as much information as they can in order to ensure a smooth and successful transition. Prior to their start date, we will ask your child to come into TDMS to complete a reading age test and assessments in both mathematics and English so that we can ensure your child is placed in a group offering the right level of challenge for these core subjects.
- Talk you through the TDMS way and our home school agreement to ensure we are all clear on our expectations of each other. We will provide you with a parent/carer handbook that details all of the key information you will need from the very beginning.
- Provide a warm welcome from your child’s Head of Year on their first day of school, and regular communication between TDMS and your family while your child settles in. Also within your child’s first week at our school, their Form Tutor will complete the ‘All About Me’ form with them. This will provide an opportunity for your child to build a relationship with their tutor by getting to know your child as an individual, as they begin a new chapter in their education. The information gathered will be shared with your child’s Achievement Leader to ensure we can offer the most appropriate support.
- Provide a transition period where that is tailored to you child and their needs. This may consist of providing your child with a buddy, offering the opportunity to regularly meet with pastoral staff or reducing homework requirements initially.
