VAPING PREVENTION PROJECT AT TDMS

At The De Montfort School, we are working in partnership with Worcestershire County Council and Public Health on a Vaping Prevention Project to support young people.

Across the country, secondary schools are reporting an increase in vaping among young people. This project aims to provide accurate information, raise awareness of the risks, and help students make informed choices.

Vaping: The Facts

  • Most vapes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can affect developing brains.
  • Short-term symptom of vaping include:
    • Coughing, dry mouth and throat
    • Mouth and throat irritation
    • Shortness of breath
    • Headaches
  • Immediate effects of nicotine:
    • Increased blood pressure
    • Increased heart rate
    • Increased breathing rate

While more research is needed on long-term risks, evidence shows that for teenagers, nicotine in vapes can lead to:

  • Increased feelings of stress, anxiety, and low mood
  • Disturbed sleep

These factors can negatively impact learning.

Vaping can also worsen asthma symptoms and may increase the risk of developing asthma. In some areas, vapes have been found to contain toxic chemicals or illegal drugs, posing serious health and wellbeing risks.

Vaping to Quit Smoking

We are aware some adults may use vaping as a tool to help quit smoking, but it is not harmless. Chief Medical Officer Professor Sir Chris Whitty says:
“If you smoke, vaping is much safer; if you don’t smoke, don’t vape.”
If you want to quit smoking and live in a household with someone under 19, free stop smoking support is available:

Vaping and the Law

  • Selling vapes to under-18s is illegal.
  • Buying vapes and giving them to under-18s is illegal.
  • Selling disposable vapes to anyone is illegal.

If you see an illegal vape, report it to Trading Standards:
