As Chair of the Governing Body, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the governing body and provide a brief insight into the work that we do to support The De Montfort School.
Our Governing Body has 11 members, across the following categories: 2 Staff (including the Headteacher), 2 Parents, 1 Local Authority and 6 Co-opted. Co-opted governors are drawn from the local community .
The interests, experience and knowledge of our members is varied and vast, but we all share one aim: ensuring that every student at TDMS has the best possible education. Governors have collective responsibility for 3 key roles: To provide a strong strategic view and support the strategic vision of the school; to act as a ‘critical friend’ in challenging the performance of the school; to ensure financial accountability.
The broad range of the members' knowledge helps us debate strategies for improvement and provide ongoing support to the Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team and all Staff. As governors we monitor and provide advice as a ‘critical friend’ across a wide range of school key indicators including outcomes, attendance, behaviour and safeguarding. We also review all School Policies, which are available to read on the website.
One key aspect of our monitoring, is that TDMS governors have a direct link with Faculties and Year Groups, where they will conduct visits to the school spending time with the Head of Faculty or Head of Learning. These link visits give governors a much greater understanding and provides an invaluable source of communication with staff in general. Please note that governors, during their visits, do not make judgements on the quality of teaching, check on progress of specific pupils or monopolise staff time. Governors support the school at all the key events across the year, such as awards evenings and parents’ information evenings. Governors also frequently join our termly Parent Voice Team meetings and attend shows, exhibitions and performances.
We are very proud of the relationship we have built with the staff and parents at TDMS and fully support the Headteacher and his staff in their determination for TDMS to become an exceptional school.
